PODD: Percutaneous Ozone Disc Decompression

"PODD" is one of the lower back pain treatments. This page explains the contents, features and procedure of the treatment.

What is PODD?

If the conservative therapy is not effective and surgery is not required, "PODD" adapts to the mild herniated discs. An extra-thin needle is inserted into the herniated disc from the back under local anesthesia, a mixture gas of ozone and oxygen is injected through the inserted needle.

As an effect of "PODD", the capacity of the herniated disc is shrunk by ozone oxidation, and this alleviates the pressure of nerves. Since it also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the affected area, "PODD" might be capable to the patients who are not adapted to the laser treatment ("PLDD"). Similar to "Hybrid Laser Treatment", "PODD" is effective on the inflamed parts by injecting ozone directly.

Operation time is short, about 15 minutes per place. The scar is hardly remained after surgery. The patients can go home in about 3 hours after surgery. A side effect or risk of a complication hardly occurs. Compared to "PLDD", "PODD" is a much more minimally invasive surgery, and also there is no risk of discitis by the heat of the laser. When a mixture gas of ozone and oxygen is injected, nucleus pulposus shrinks, and the inflammation of the nerve root is reduced. Causal therapy (surgery therapy) and symptomatic treatment (conservative therapy) can be done at the same time under "PODD" treatment.

However, since "PODD" does not adapt to all types of hernia, a medical examination is necessary for confirming the presence or absence of adaptation (another treatment might be added depending on a result). Japanese health insurance does not cover "PODD" treatment.

The features of PODD

  • ・Hardly bleeding
  • ・Local anesthesia
  • ・Operation time is very short, about 15 minutes per place
  • ・Almost no scar will remain
  • ・Hospitalization is not needed
  • ・More minimally invasive compared to "PLDD"
  • ・Not suitable for all types of hernia
  • ・In the severe cases, another treatment might be added

The procedure of PODD

Description of the procedure of "PODD"

Generally there are 2 types of procedure.

※Please prepare MRI images taken within 3 months if you have.
※MRI images might be taken again in this hospital according to the symptoms.

他院で撮影された場合は来院回数が減ります。そのため遠方にお住まいの方にお勧めしています。

The details of the schedule

If MRI image are taken in this hospital

A schedule on the first day

Reception

Please go the reception on the first floor when you arrive at hospital.

MRI scan

The doctor in charge will ask the patient about the details of the symptoms and identify the cause of lower back pain through the result of the examination, and diagnosing whether the laser surgery is adaptable or not.

If the surgery is adaptable, the staff will give the patients the details of the treatment and arrange the date for surgery.
