PLDD: Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression

"PLDD" is one of the lower back pain treatments. This page explains the contents, features and procedure of the treatment.

What is PLDD?

"PLDD" is the treatment to burn a part of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc with a laser. Under local anesthesia, an extra-thin needle is inserted into the herniated disc from the back. Laser fiber is injected through the inserted needle to burn the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc. As a result, a cavity is formed, and the intervertebral disc shrinks. Then the pressure of the nerve is reduced, and the pain and numbness are relieved.

In the case of the surgery like "MED" method, hospitalization is needed for about one month including bed rest and rehabilitation. On the other hand, "PLDD" will be done in only 15 minutes under local anesthesia. For example, if the patients undergo "PLDD" in the morning, it is possible to return home at 2 in the afternoon. Compared to surgical treatment, time and the burden of the body are minimized.

Also "PLDD" is effective in the difficult non-specific lower back pain to identify the cause. Though "PLDD" is certainly the excellent treatment, does not mean absolutely effective for all patients with the herniated discs. It is important to do a thorough examination, such as MRI images to identify the cause of lower back pain and to choose appropriate treatment according to the symptoms. Even if the symptoms of lower back pain are diagnosed with another disease, the patient can receive another treatment in this hospital.

The features of PLDD

  • ・Hardly bleeding
  • ・Local anesthesia
  • ・Operation time is very short, about 15 minutes per place
  • ・Almost no scar will remain
  • ・Hospitalization is not needed
  • ・Not suitable for all types of herniation
  • ・Improvement rate is approximately 80% (Numbness in lower limb may
    remain in some cases)
  • ・In severe cases, another treatment might be added
  • ・There is a possibility of causing a reactive radiculitis or discitis or
infection in the rare thermal stimulation

The procedure of PLDD

Generally there are 2 types of procedure.

※Please prepare MRI images taken within 3 months if you have.
※MRI images might be taken again in this hospital according to the symptoms.
