MED: Microendoscopic Discectomy
"MED" is one of the lower back pain treatments. This page explains the contents, features and procedure of the treatment.
What is MED？
"MED" is the surgical method to be applied to the herniated discs from moderate to severe. An around 1.6 cm long incision is formed on the back under general anesthesia, an outer cylinder tube and endoscope are inserted into to excise the projecting herniated part.
Operation time is relatively short, takes approximately 1 hour. The features of "MED" are that peeling of the muscle and respiratory complications seldom occur, and also postoperative pain is expected to be mild. Japanese health insurance covers "MED". Hospitalization is needed about 1 week. Since "MED" requires high technical skill, the patients can undergo "MED" in the specialized hospitals only.
